I hate being asked “What’s your why?”… for me its not enough.

I don’t like the question why. Well…I do and I ask it a lot lol. But in business? In a business plan? When you’re first starting out? I hate it.

They say, “When you know your why, it will root you.” When I started searching for my own why, I realized something… I’m not rooted that way.

People say things like:

“My why is my family.”

“My why is my children.”

“My why is financial freedom.”

While those are beautiful reasons to keep going… none of them have ever been enough to motivate me out of bed every day. That’s supposed to be the measure of your determination, right? Your why is supposed to be your source of motivation. So why isn’t a centralized why enough for me?

Where Did the Whole “Find Your Why” Thing Even Come From?

I was today years old when I realized that one of my favorite speakers, Simon Sinek, is the mastermind behind the “Find Your Why” movement. (Simon, if you ever see this… I blame you for the beautiful rabbit hole I’ve gone down.) As I said, I’ve been wondering why my why didn’t feel deep enough. It’s supposed to be the reason you get out of bed in the morning, but as someone who loves to sleep, that’s a high bar.

Let me give you a quick list of things that should be enough to motivate me:

  • My children’s happiness
  • My own happiness
  • My family
  • My business

And yet… it hasn’t been.

So does that mean I don’t really have a why? Maybe it’s not that. Maybe I just need new language. Maybe the better, more fitting word is purpose.

Why / Purpose, Tomato / To-mah-to

After going through the process again of trying to find my why, it became clear…It’s not that I don’t know it… It’s that I don’t know how to articulate it. So, I turned to ChatGPT. I answered five simple questions. And through that, I was able to shape my purpose statement.

So Now What?

Now that I can finally articulate my why or rather, my purpose is it going to change how I move in the world? Will it help me get out of bed every day? Will it give me the fuel I’ve been missing? Right now… I’m not sure. But what I do know is this…I love seeing the end result of things and even though I don’t always enjoy the process 24/7. I am genuinely excited to see how this newly articulated revelation starts shaping my day-to-day life.
